The Secret to Packing for Active Vacations

Whether you're going on an adventure packed vacation [think hiking, sky diving], a yoga retreat, or simply planning a relaxing vacation jam packed with lounging - you really don't need much.

Tips:

Mix and match athleisure basics to easily pair tops and bottoms for whatever you have planned

Fold and pack your items so they are all visible

Pack underwear alongside your outfit choices

Separate active, lounge, and dining wear

For Her:

Make your pieces work harder - i.e. longline sports bras double as shirts and bras whatever the activity!

Ever book a connecting flight to find out you can't check your bags? *Learning Lesson* If you book your connecting flights separate on JetBlue, they can't merge the two itineraries and therefore cannot keep your bag checked through your final destination. So you can imagine I was this traveler's first call when she found out she had to pack two weeks of clothes in a carry on.

Or maybe you just don't want to check a bag for your longer trips. Either way, I got you covered! Here is how we packed for two weeks in a warm weather destination in just one carry on suitcase.

FIRST WE REVIEWED THE ITINERARY

If you're the type that always thinks you need 5 pairs of emergency underwear, a bathing suit change every 4 hours, and a different pair of shoes for every single outfit, continue reading this.

We took a notorious overpacker and converted him to an accurate packer.

Night

Here's how we got there:

PACK
  1. We laid out the itinerary: hanging out in the sun and dining
  2. We agreed on the number of bags: 1
  3. Once outfits were optimized for minimal packing and finalized, they were folded neatly
  4. Items were packed in the garment bag, separated by day and night outfits. Blazers and button ups (on thin hangers with blazer/button up pairs married), and bottoms were placed together by outfit for ease.
  5. Valuables were packed in the personal bag in case the carry on was checked at the gate

PRODUCT
  • Client owned Tumi garment bag was used. While this is a quality item, we feel that in the carry. This client is happily switching to a Hook & Albert Men's weekender/garment bag!

The Pack

Here's how we got there:

PREP
  1. General itinerary requested for day of packing
  2. Client opted to take out and pile items she wanted to pack 3 days prior

PACK
  1. Together, we went through the itinerary and planned outfits for general activities (i.e. I might shop, we are going to a fancy dinner one of these two nights in this city)
  2. In a clear space, outfits (including shoes and accessories) were placed by day
  3. Once outfits were optimized for minimal packing and finalized, they were folded neatly
  4. Items were packed in the carry on by day, with earlier days on top
  5. Valuables were packed in the personal bag in case the carry on was checked at the gate

PRODUCT
  • All packing products were client owned. Travel cubes and additional dust bags for shoes would be recommended for future travel.
